The New Norm
Change is hard. I like what I like, and there is no reason for it to change because it is working for me. But, the world is changing around us like it or not. We will spend the next several months discovering what our new normal is, and it will be uncomfortable.
I know that doesn't sound very hopeful, but our hope is not found in this world. Galatians 6:14 says, "But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."
Yes, the world is changing, but God isn't. And because of the cross and the faith (active trust) we put in Jesus and His work on the cross, we are ushered into an eternal reality, and the things of this world have no impact on us. We live in and for a higher truth and purpose. Despite the changes, the new norm, the new experiences, the upsetting of routine, King Jesus is still on the throne and still engaging us through His Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:13-15 says, "For you were called to freedom...Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." Because of the cross, we are free from hopelessness. We are free from the bondage of brokenness. We are free from the exhaustion of worry. We are free from the consistent battle with shame. Why? Because the cross creates a bridge that, that through faith, I can walk across to a new standing in Jesus. And now, because I am at peace with myself through the work of Jesus, I am freed to an eternal purpose of loving others.
Did you see that? Even though the world changes, our status in Jesus doesn't. This consistent belonging gives us freedom, a unique advantage to navigate change, and live in the eternal norm of our relationship with Jesus. Jesus is our new norm, and no matter what shifts or changes around us, I am secure in Him and hope-filled despite that challenge that lies in my path.
This freedom is a freedom like no other. "The world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." We are given real and eternal freedom in the person of Jesus Christ. The world can continue to change, but I am secure knowing that I live for a timeless, fully-restored reality called Heaven.
Living for eternity unlocks the life-giving purpose of serving and loving others. Are you living free today? Freedom is found in Jesus.
